The User Guide for the Review of Clinical Variation has been updated and now includes a case study on ‘Variation in outcomes from cardiac surgery’. The User Guide supports health services  to implement Action 1.28 of the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards. It explains how health services and their clinicians can use data to improve the appropriateness of clinical care. It includes a suite of case studies that take users through the six steps of reviewing clinical variation data to improve processes and care.  The new case study looks at how data from a quarterly report of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons’ Cardiac Surgery (ANZCTS) Database were used by a metropolitan cardiac unit to investigate the reasons for its outlier status for two key performance indicators.

The Multi-Purpose Services Aged Care Module (the MPS Aged Care Module) has been developed by the Commission in collaboration with the Australian Government, state and territory departments of health, and the Commission’s Multi-Purpose Services Project Advisory Committee. The MPS Aged Care Module describes, in six actions, the requirements of the Aged Care Quality Standards not covered by the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards. It is only applicable to eligible MPS and was endorsed by the Australian Health Minister’s Advisory Council on 7 February 2020.
