National Consensus Statement: essential elements for recognising & responding to clinical deterioration

The Indicator Monitoring Tool is a data repository, analysis and reporting tool for the Sepsis Clinical Care Standard indicators. It can be used by healthcare services to capture and audit individual patient data, examine results and identify targets for improvement. A Quick Reference Guide and a demonstration version of the Indicator Monitoring Tool using sample data are available to support the use of the tool.

On 30 June 2022, the Commission released the new Sepsis Clinical Care Standard. The new standard is a ‘game changer’ that will ensure healthcare workers recognise sepsis as a medical emergency.

This self-assessment tool supports the development and monitoring of quality improvement plans for sepsis care by allowing services to assess their progress towards implementing key elements of the Sepsis Clinical Care Standard. The Sepsis Clinical Care Standard Self-Assessment Tool can be used when establishing a new sepsis program, or to support the delivery and continual improvement of an existing sepsis program. 

On 27 April 2022, the Commission released the new national Opioid Analgesic Stewardship in Acute Pain Clinical Care Standard.

This tool has been developed to specifically support services intending to transition from implementation of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards 2nd edition to implementation of the Primary and Community Healthcare Standards.  It should be used together with the relevant NSQHS Standards guide and the Accreditation Workbook, available on the Commission’s website.

A version of the Indicator Monitoring Tool with sample data is also available for demonstration purposes to support services using the tool.

On 4 November 2022, the Commission released the first national Stillbirth Clinical Care Standard to reduce rates of stillbirth and remove the culture of silence.

The standard provides a framework for healthcare practitioners to identify stillbirth risks, communicate effectively with women about reducing risk, discuss clinical investigations after stillbirth, and provide support after perinatal loss.

On 1 September 2022, the Commission released the first national Low Back Pain Clinical Care Standard to improve early management of patients with this common condition, which is a leading cause of disability worldwide.

The standard advocates a shift towards active approaches to support people with low back pain and reduce their chance of ongoing problems.

This Gap Analysis tool developed by Julie Furlan from Darwin Private Hospital will assist organisations to understand what gaps exist in their current work flows, policies and procedures to enable the implementation of the Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standard.
