Point of Care Testing Standard Consultation

The Commission is undertaking a broad consultation on the draft Point of Care Testing (POCT) Standard to support health and aged care service providers in enhancing the quality and safety of POCT practices.

The survey and call for written submissions closes on 12 December 2025

The opportunity to participate in an online focus group is between 4 February to 10 February 2026.

Overview

The POCT Standard has been developed following extensive consultation with technicians, scientists, medical practitioners, pathologists, consumers, professional and peak bodies, health service organisations, pathology practices, jurisdictions and government agencies.

The POCT Standard aims to support health and aged care service providers conducting POCT by enhancing patient safety, ensuring quality assurance, promoting consistent practices across care settings, and maintaining a relevant framework as new technologies emerge.

Individuals and organisations can complete a short online survey to share feedback.

Written feedback

Individuals and organisations can send a written submission to pathology@safetyandquality.gov.au.

Written submissions can address all or any of the following questions:

Attend an online focus group to discuss the Point of Care Testing Standard between 4 February to 10 February 2026.

Outcome of the consultation

Following the consultation, the Commission will:

  1. Analyse the feedback with National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) and the Point of Care Testing Working Group
  2. Finalise the Point of Care Testing Standard for release in 2026.
