Help protect our present, and secure our future by taking part in World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2025 (WAAW), held from 18 to 24 November.

We can all take an active role in protecting ourselves and our patients from antimicrobial resistance.

Help protect our present, and secure our future by taking part in World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2025 (WAAW), held from 18 to 24 November.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to antimicrobials, making infections difficult or impossible to treat. Overuse and inappropriate use of antimicrobials contributes to the development of AMR.

AMR has devastating implications including treatment failure, extended hospital stays, higher costs to the healthcare system and higher mortality rates.

In the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) latest analysis of antimicrobials in clinical and preclinical development, the WHO states the pipeline for new antimicrobials is insufficient to tackle the ever-growing threat of the emergence and spread of AMR.

Combined strategies of antimicrobial stewardship, hand hygiene and infection prevention and control are the most effective ways to reduce inappropriate antimicrobial use to prevent and control AMR and ensure the sustainability of healthcare.
