Strengthening sepsis data: A roadmap for the next five years

A new National Sepsis Data Plan – Strategic Analysis Report released by the Commission envisions the future state of sepsis data in Australia.

It sets out a five-year plan to improve the quality of data to better understand the true burden of Sepsis and inform strategies aimed at improving early detection, treatment and outcomes.

Developed for the Commission by Callida Consulting as part of the National Sepsis Program Extension, the report examines current challenges and opportunities in sepsis data collection and use. It identifies three key enablers to achieving a robust national approach:

  • Inter-jurisdictional commitment to consistent data standards
  • Strategic sponsorship and investment to support national implementation
  • Investment in and inclusion of lived experience.

Improving how sepsis data is collected, recorded and shared will strengthen clinical practice, quality improvement and research. A national data strategy would give clinicians and policymakers the reliable, consistent data needed to improve care and patient outcomes.”

- Conjoint Professor Carolyn Hullick, Commission Chief Medical Officer.
