Amendment to the Requirements for laboratory testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV)

The Commission, in consultation with the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC), advises of an amendment to the confirmatory testing for HIV and HCV of the Requirements for laboratory testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV).

The amendment is to support:

  • a consistent national approach to automatic reflexive HCV RNA testing
  • the goal of eliminating HCV as a public health threat by 2030
  • harmonisation of testing algorithms with international practice.

Specifically, the amendments include:

  • additions to Appendix A
  • an update to C10.1(ii), now renumbered as C6.01(b).

The amendment is enforceable from 23 March 2026

The updated version of the Requirements for laboratory testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) (Fifth Edition, 2026) is available on the Commission’s website.
