Standards supporting sustainable, resilient, high-quality care

The Commission has released a new Healthcare Sustainability and Resilience Module (the Module) to support health services in delivering high-quality care while reducing environmental impacts and managing climate risks.

This new Module provides a framework of actions that supports health service organisations integrate environmental sustainability and climate resilience strategies into their approach to safety and quality improvement.

The Module works with the safety and quality standards developed by the Commission to drive continuous quality improvement that addresses the risks from environmental determinants of health on our patients and communities.

Clinicians, health service leaders and quality teams can use their existing systems for continuous quality improvement to strengthen climate resilience and sustainability, without starting from scratch. The Module also supports integration of mitigation and adaptation strategies into care delivery, using the same systems that support patient safety and quality.

The Module is now available to download.

Sustainability and resilience in the NSQHS Standards third edition

The Commission is consulting on emerging challenges to improve patient care into the future through the development of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards third edition.

Over the coming months, the Commission will develop a scale for services to check the maturity of their approach to implementing the Module. This will allow health services to be assessed to the Module without impacting their accreditation, while giving useful information on how mature their approach is. This approach  will prepare health services for assessments to the NSQHS Standards third edition, anticipated to commence in 2030.
