World Patient Safety Day
World Patient Safety Day, celebrated on 17 September each year, is a World Health Organization global initiative focused on promoting safer healthcare practices and minimising patient harm.
Overview
In 2025 the World Health Organization (WHO) selected “safe care for every newborn and child”, with the slogan “Patient safety from the start!”. This theme emphasises the need to act early and consistently to prevent harm throughout childhood, and yield benefits across the life course.
Celebrate World Patient Safety Day
Join the Commission in celebrating patient voices by raising awareness of World Patient Safety Day. You can also access print and digital resources from the World Health Organization's World Patient Safety Day website.
In recognition of World Patient Safety Day, the National Carillon, John Gorton Building, Treasury Building, Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) and the Captain Cook Memorial Jet were lit in orange on 17 September 2025 to symbolise our commitment to patient safety.
