Australian Safety and Quality Medical Imaging Accreditation Scheme
The Commission is undertaking a consultation on the Australian Safety and Quality Medical Imaging Accreditation (ASQMIA) Scheme. Medical Imaging providers will be assessed against the National Safety and Quality Medical Imaging (NSQMI) Standards under the ASQMIA Scheme. This scheme will replace the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme (DIAS).
The Stage 1 consultation is open until Friday 18 July 2025 while the Stage 2 consultation will occur in August 2025.
Overview
The Commission has developed the Australian Safety and Quality Medical Imaging Accreditation (ASQMIA) Scheme to replace the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme (DIAS). The Commission is seeking feedback on the proposed ASQMIA Scheme.
The proposed ASQMIA Scheme outlines the assessment process for medical imaging providers being accredited to the National Safety and Quality Medical Imaging (NSQMI) Standards. By assessing implementation of the NSQMI Standards, the Scheme is designed to ensure medical imaging providers meet high-quality standards, leading to better patient outcomes and safer health care.
The NSQMI Standards cannot be assessed with a desktop assessment. Desktop audits often create unnecessary administrative burden on medical imaging practices as they rely on generating documentation that is not associated with patient care.
The proposed assessment will ensure imaging providers are assessed on their day-to-day patient care and documentation prepared as part of patient care, therefore reducing accreditation paperwork. The accreditation scheme will operate multiple assessment formats, the format applied will be determined based on the imaging practice’s size, complexity and patient risks.
Stage 1 - Survey, verbal and written feedback
Survey
Individuals and organisations can complete an online survey to share feedback.
Verbal feedback
Individuals wishing to provide verbal feedback can contact the Commission to arrange an appointment by contacting the Safety and Quality Advice Centre, AdviceCentre@safetyandquality.gov.au, or phone 1800 304 056.
Written feedback
Individuals and organisations can send a written submission to the Commission, diagnosticimaging@safetyandquality.gov.au. The submissions can address none, some, or all of the following questions:
- Clarification: Does any of the content of the ASQMIA scheme need clarification?
- Appropriateness: Is the categorising of imaging practices by risk appropriate?
- Safety and quality: In comparison to the DIAS desktop assessment, will the ASQMIA scheme improve medical imaging safety and quality?
- Concerns: Do you have any concerns in relation to the ASQMIA scheme?
- Other feedback: Please provide any other feedback relevant to the ASQMIA scheme.
The Commission also welcomes comments and feedback on the ASQMIA Scheme summary.
Please email your feedback to diagnosticimaging@safetyandquality.gov.au
Publication of responses
Survey responses and verbal and written submissions may be published. For submissions, this can include the names of organisations. If you want your submission to remain confidential, please advise the Commission.
Stage 2 – Virtual Forums
The Commission is conducting consumer and stakeholder forums that will last approximately 1.5 hours. These forums will explore the issues and themes identified from the surveys, written and verbal feedback.
We welcome professional and industry groups, imaging practitioners and practice providers to join a forum. Please select a session below and register your attendance.
