Communiqué 10: National Sepsis Program Oversight Group – 21 August 2025
This communiqué summarises the final meeting of the National Sepsis Program Extension. It may be used by members to update their nominating organisations and other key agencies about the National Sepsis Program Extension (Program Extension).
National Sepsis Program Oversight Group
The Oversight Group is chaired by Conjoint Professor Carolyn Hullick, Chief Medical Officer at the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission). The final meeting was jointly held with members of the Sepsis Commonwealth, State and Territory Liaison Group, who have also been assisting the Commission on the Program Extension.
The Commission provided an overview of program and project achievements.
Members noted positive feedback about the free online education module ‘sepsis in primary care’, including suggestions to enhance the training with mobile device adaptations, content customisation for clinical roles and more content for advanced learners. Members supported the Commission’s focus on increasing the availability of the module, including to students.
Members reviewed the final model of care framework for sepsis care coordination and postsepsis support and noted that release and distribution is planned for late September 2025. Members complimented the Commission on the quality of a National Sepsis Data Plan Strategic Analysis Report.
Members noted that the Commission is re-scoping the project about improving recognition of sepsis in First Nations peoples. Results will be reported as an addendum to the final report. Members noted that the new sepsis epidemiology report will be launched on 10 September ahead of World Sepsis Day 2025 and requested the Commission distribute additional media information and materials to support consistent national messaging.
Members discussed the draft executive summary and recommendations for the program extension’s final report. They noted that further work is required across health systems to improve sepsis prevention, recognition and outcomes.
The Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing acknowledged the strong partnership approach which has led to the success of the National Sepsis Program Extension. This includes between the Commission and the George Institute for Global Health and Sepsis Australia, and contributions from every Australian state and territory health service, sepsis survivors, clinical and technical experts, and researchers. The Commission reported that over 200 people have actively participated in program governance, design and implementation.
Conjoint Professor Hullick thanked all members for their support and contributions.
Next steps
The Commission will submit a final program report and plan for the First Nations project to the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
