EL2 Director, Healthcare Variation

The Director is responsible for leading the healthcare variation program development and implementation and reports to the Chief Medical Officer. As a member of the Leadership team, the Program Director provides strategic advice and leadership for the development and delivery of the program within the Commission’s approved work plan, and supports the delivery of Commission priorities and programs regarding safety and quality in healthcare.

Duties of the Director will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Provide program leadership by managing and coordinating the planning, development and implementation of the healthcare variation program as part of the Commission’s work plan.
  2. Oversight the planning, development and delivery of the Australian Atlas of Healthcare Variation series and other major projects.
  3. Collaborate and negotiate with a range of internal, jurisdictional, national and other government and non-government stakeholders, taking a strategic perspective on opportunities for development of the Commission’s work on healthcare variation.
  4. Implement the work plan of the Commission and other complementary activities required to meet the overall responsibilities of the Commission, as directed by the CEO and the Chief Medical Officer.
  5. Work closely with the Chief Medical Officer and Executive Management team in developing and managing effective and productive relations with the Commonwealth, jurisdictions and other key stakeholders.
  6. Promote the program’s priorities and work through a range of communications, public relations and appropriate fora.
  7. Provide advice and coordinate the Commission’s involvement in relevant inter-government committees, working groups and projects at a national level, including undertaking representational activities on behalf of the CEO, the Chief Medical Officer and the Commission.
  8. Provide high level advice to the CEO, Board and Commission standing committees on the program.
  9. Ensure the Chief Medical Officer is consulted and informed about the implementation of, and progress on, program projects and strategic implications.
  10. Provide leadership to staff including undertaking performance management responsibilities for the program team.
  11. Undertake the fiscal management of the program including program budgeting and staff resourcing in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer.
  12. Collaborate with other teams across the Commission to ensure alignment with other work programs and strategic priorities. 

The successful candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated experience in program management including strategic planning, organisational capability, risk management and managing budgets, with a focus on achieving outstanding results.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in leading and managing a high functioning data analytics team.
  • Highly developed data analytical, visualisation and reporting skills and conceptual ability, with the demonstrated capacity for sound judgement and related to analysis and presentation of data on health care variation and ways in which the data can be used to improve care
  • Strong interpersonal skills including an ability to communicate with influence and cultivate productive working relationships with a range of government and non-government stakeholders regarding models of care and levers for health system improvement.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills including demonstrated ability to prepare high level briefing documents and submissions, present to a range of audiences, and explain complex technical and clinical issues regarding healthcare variation.
  • Highly developed skills in understanding and communicating the role of healthcare variation for health standards, particularly clinical governance.
  • An extensive and comprehensive understanding of Australia’s health care system, including the development and implementation of national approaches to safety and quality in health care.

Please note: This position will be offered in a hybrid model of office based (Sydney) and working from home, where operationally feasible. A regular weekly presence in the office is required.
