Requirements for laboratory testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) (Fifth Edition, 2026)

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, in consultation with the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC), advises of an amendment to the confirmatory testing for HIV and HCV of the Requirements for laboratory testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV).

The amendment is to support:

  • a consistent national approach to automatic reflexive HCV RNA testing
  • the goal of eliminating HCV as a public health threat by 2030
  • harmonisation of testing algorithms with international practice.

The amendment is enforceable from 23 March 2026
