National Safety and Quality Medical Imaging Standards Consultation
The Commission is undertaking a consultation on the National Safety and Quality Medical Imaging (NSQMI) Standards. These standards will replace the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme Standards.
The Stage 1 consultation is open until Friday 27 September 2024 while the Stage 2 consultation will occur in October 2024.
Overview
The Commission is revising the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme Standards and has developed draft National Safety and Quality Medical Imaging (NSQMI) Standards.

The draft NSQMI Standards and Implementation Resource include reflective questions, suggested strategies, examples of evidence and useful resources. While the draft NSQMI Standards only contain the standards. It is your choice which resource to provide feedback on.

We encourage consumers to read the Introduction to the NSQMI Standards to understand the role of these standards in improving medical imaging safety and quality.
Stage 1 - Online survey, verbal and written feedback
Online survey
Individuals and organisations can complete one of the following surveys:
Verbal feedback
Individuals wishing to provide verbal feedback can contact the Commission to arrange an appointment by contacting the Safety and Quality Advice Centre, AdviceCentre@safetyandquality.gov.au, or phone 1800 304 056.
Written feedback
Individuals and organisations can send a written submission to diagnosticimaging@safetyandquality.gov.au. The submissions can address none, some or all the following questions:
- Are there medical imaging safety and quality issues not addressed in the standards?
- Do the actions describe the level of safety and quality medical imaging practices should provide?
- Are the actions’ language clear and easy to understand?
- Can any actions or sub-actions be removed without impacting patient safety and quality?
- Do the reflective questions, suggested strategies, examples of evidence, and resources support implementing the actions?
- Will complying with the standards involve:
- changes to processes or infrastructure?
- additional activities and resources?

Publication of responses
Survey responses and verbal and written submissions may be published. For submissions, this can include the names of organisations. If you want your submission to remain confidential, please advise the Commission.
Stage 2 – Focus Groups
The Commission is conducting consumer and stakeholder focus groups that will last approximately 1.5 hours. The purpose of the focus groups is to explore the issues and themes identified from the surveys, written and verbal feedback.
Consumers can register their interest in attending a focus group by emailing their name and phone number to diagnosticimaging@safetyandquality.gov.au.
Professional and industry groups, imaging practitioners and practice providers can select a session below and register their attendance.
