Accreditation
Accreditation provides assurances to the community that healthcare services meet the expected standards for safety and quality. It is a formal program where trained independent reviewers assess evidence of implementation for specified standards.
The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) is responsible for formulating and administering model national accreditation schemes for healthcare services that relate to healthcare safety and quality matters. This involves:
- Formulating rules for the accreditation scheme
- Providing oversight to the accreditation process through the approval of accrediting agencies and managing their performance
- Working to ensure consistent, high-quality assessments across accrediting agencies approved to conduct assessments
- Evaluating the effectiveness of accreditation schemes using assessment outcome data.
The Commission has responsibility for the following schemes:
- Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation (AHSSQA) Scheme
- National General Practice Accreditation (NGPA) Scheme
- Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme (DIAS)
- National Pathology Accreditation Scheme (NPAS).
The Commission maintains a list of Approved Accrediting Agencies with information on what standards they are approved to assess against and contact information.
