Today the Commission has published the first national standard to support better diagnosis and management of the condition – the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Clinical Care Standard.
The 2024 APS employee census was undertaken between 6 May 2024 and 7 June 2024. As part of our commitment to making the Commission an even better place to work, we are implementing an agency-action plan to address areas where we can improve.
The quality statements in the COPD Clinical Care Standard are based on the best available evidence and guideline recommendations at the time of development. This document summarises the relevant evidence sources for each of the 10 quality statements.

MEDIA RELEASE
One in 13 Australians over the age of 40 have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but alarmingly only half of them know they have it.
Awareness of this incurable lung disease – which makes it difficult to breathe – lags considerably behind other serious chronic health conditions, despite COPD being a leading cause of avoidable hospitalisations.
