Hospital Antimicrobial Use
Data on antimicrobial use in hospitals are collected for the AURA Surveillance System by the National Antimicrobial Utilisation Surveillance Program (NAUSP) and the National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey (NAPS).
Antimicrobial use is a key factor in the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
Antimicrobials are an integral component of health care delivery. Antimicrobials need to be readily available and effective. When resistance to an antimicrobial emerges and the effectiveness of that antimicrobial is reduced it has a significant impact on an individual’s treatment and the community more broadly.
The NAUSP collects information on the volume of antimicrobial usage in Australian hospitals and the NAPS collects data on appropriateness of prescribing.
