Pregnancy ultrasound: what you need to know

This information sheet on pregnancy ultrasounds explains the important difference between diagnostic and non-diagnostic ultrasounds.

It describes the different types of diagnostic ultrasound that can be used to check the development, growth and wellbeing of unborn babies.

A diagnostic ultrasound can only be done by a sonographer or clinician qualified in ultrasound. If booking a scan, ask if the imaging provider is accredited to the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme (DIAS) Standards to ensure staff are qualified.
