The User Guide supports health services  to implement Action 1.28 of the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards. It explains how health services and their clinicians can use data to improve the appropriateness of clinical care. It includes a suite of case studies that take users through the six steps of reviewing clinical variation data to improve processes and care.

Exemplar practice

The awarding of exemplar practice is used to highlight examples of safe and good-quality practice in health services who are implementing the NSQHS Standards, to facilitate the sharing of information between organisations.

Consumers and accreditation

Awarding accreditation to a health service organisation provides assurance to the community that the organisation meets expected patient safety and quality standards.

Approved accrediting agencies contact details

Approved accrediting agencies assess health service organisations to the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, Multi-Purpose Services (MPS) Module, and/or the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework. These agencies are approved by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) following application and review by an approval panel.

Assessment to the NSQHS Standards

All public and private hospitals, day procedure services and public dental practices are required to be accredited to the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.

Many other healthcare facilities will also choose to be accredited in order to improve the safety and quality of health care provision. Assessment to the NSQHS Standards second edition commenced in January 2019.

NSQHS Standards Guide for interim accreditation

The purpose of this guide is to describe the actions in the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (second edition) for health service organisations about to commence operations. Interim accreditation to the requirements set out in this document will generally apply for the first 12 months of operation.

NSQHS Standards monitoring tool for day procedure services

The purpose of this tool is to allow day procedure services to track the progress of implementing each standard. It should be used together with the NSQHS Standards Guide for day procedure services and the accreditation workbook. The monitoring tool has been updated to reflect the new Preventing and Controlling Infections Standard.

The purpose of this tool is to allow hospitals to track the progress of implementing each standard. It should be used together with the NSQHS Standards Guide for hospitals and the accreditation workbook. The monitoring tool has been updated to reflect the new Preventing and Controlling Infections Standard.

Patient journey and tracer methodologies

The key findings of the report on patient journey and tracer methodologies (hereafter referred to as ‘patient journey methodologies’) are discussed according to the evidence of its effectiveness and considerations for its use in the AHSSQA Scheme.
