Requirements for laboratory testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) (Fifth Edition, 2025)

From 1 July 2021, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) assumed responsibility for coordinating the National Pathology Accreditation (NPA) Scheme and supporting the development of the Pathology Standards.

Requirements for laboratory testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) (Fifth Edition, 2025) in currently in use.

This Standard sets out the requirements for pathology practice related to HIV and HCV to ensure it is safe and of high-quality. The 2026 amendment supports:

  • a consistent national approach to automatic reflexive HCV RNA testing
  • the goal of eliminating HCV as a public health threat by 2030
  • harmonisation of testing algorithms with international practice
