Hospital mortality

Hospital mortality is a key indicator of patient safety and quality of care. Our toolkit supports the monitoring of in-hospital mortality.

What is in-hospital mortality?

In-hospital mortality refers to the death of a patient during their hospitalisation.

This can happen for many different reasons, so it is important that hospitals monitor hospital mortality to identify if there is a potential safety and quality issue.

How we are supporting hospitals to monitor in-hospital mortality

Reviewing in-hospital mortality rate data is crucial to identifying and tracking trends in hospital deaths and introducing safety and quality improvements if needed.

Our Core hospital-based outcome indicators Toolkit provides resources to monitor in-hospital mortality, including:

  • A national core, hospital-based outcome indicators specification
  • SAS (statistical software) programs for use with local hospital data
  • technical notes to accompany SAS programs, and
  • coefficients and reference sets generated from national data for risk adjustment and comparison.

A consent form which also agrees to our Terms and conditions need to be completed and accepted to access the toolkit.
