‘Sip Til Send’ allows patients to consume small volumes of water or other clear liquids, up until they are called to theatre. This approach decreases the ‘no oral liquid’ period, reducing the negative effects of prolonged fasting.
The guidance has been informed by a literature review and environmental scan and developed with expert clinical oversight and stakeholder input. It is accompanied by implementation resources to support local adoption by health service organisations.
What resources are available?
The national ‘Sip Til Send’ resources include:
- fact sheets for clinicians and patients
- an implementation guide for health service organisations
- supporting education and information materials for local adaptation
What does this mean for health service organisations?
Health service organisations can use the guidance to:
- plan and implement ‘Sip Til Send’ where it is not currently in place
- review and strengthen existing pre‑procedural oral liquid intake practices.
'Sip Til Send’ forms part of the Commission’s program of work to support the safe, appropriate and sustainable use of IV fluids in hospital settings. Download our resources now.
