Atlas Focus Report: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
This Atlas of Healthcare Variation report examines MBS-subsidised spirometry and PBS-subsidised COPD medicines - two elements of care in the COPD Clinical Care Standard.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive and debilitating respiratory condition that can be life limiting. Best-practice care has the potential to improve health outcomes and quality of life for people living with COPD.
This interactive report examines two elements of COPD care:
- Spirometry, which is essential for accurate diagnosis
- Pharmacotherapy, which should be stepped up (or down) according to severity of symptoms; triple therapy (ICS with LAMA and LABA)* should be reserved for COPD patients with frequent exacerbations and with significant symptoms despite optimal dual therapy; and for those with co-existing asthma1, 2
*Abbreviations: ICS – inhaled corticosteroids, LAMA – long-acting muscarinic antagonist; LABA – long-acting beta2-agonist
Key findings
- Spirometry rates decreased nationally by 31% between 2015–16 and 2022–23
- Office-based spirometry decreased by 68% nationally, compared with a 7% decrease in laboratory-based spirometry, between 2015–16 and 2022–23
- Prescriptions dispensed for COPD single therapy with a LAMA or a LABA decreased nationally by 55% between 2015–16 and 2022–23
- Prescriptions dispensed for COPD triple therapy (ICS with LAMA and LABA) increased nationally by 130% between 2015–16 and 2022–23
- In most states and territories, the rate of COPD triple therapy was higher than other examined COPD pharmacotherapy options in 2022–23
- Across all reporting periods, major cities and inner regional areas had higher rates of spirometry and prescriptions dispensed for COPD, compared to outer regional and remote areas.
