NSQHS Standards (third edition) Consultation

Public consultation now open

We are seeking feedback on the initial draft of the NSQHS Standards (third edition), including whether they:

  • reflect key safety and quality priorities
  • clearly describe expectations for health service organisations
  • support the delivery of high-quality care
  • reduce compliance burden while maintaining safety and quality
  • are clear, easy to understand and free from unnecessary duplication

We encourage you to review the draft Standards before providing feedback, so your comments can help identify what is working well and where improvements may be needed.

You can download The Rationale for Change to find out more about why we are changing the structure and emphasis of the NSQHS Standards.

The consultation is open until Friday 25 September 2026.

Have your say

This consultation is more than a feedback process. Whether you work at the frontline, lead a service, deliver policy, or are a consumer, this is your opportunity to shape the national framework that supports safety and quality in Australian health services.

The Consultation Overview outlines the different ways that you can provide feedback.

First Nations peoples

The Commission welcomes feedback from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, so the Standards are fit for purpose.

To participate, First Nations peoples can make a written submission, complete the consumer survey or contact the Safety and Quality Advice Centre to provide verbal feedback.

To assist with providing feedback on the Standards, the Commission has prepared a Requirements Summary that collates the requirements directly related to First Nations peoples.

In parallel with the drafting of the NSQHS Standards, the Commission is coordinating a First Nations-led project to analyse evidence on standards for cultural safety to inform recommendations regarding national standards for cultural safety for hospitals. Learn more on the First Nations health page.

Consumers

The Commission welcomes feedback from consumers to ensure the Standards focus on patient experience and outcomes.

To participate, consumers can make a written submission, complete the consumer survey or contact the Safety and Quality Advice Centre to provide verbal feedback.
