National Standard Medication Chart (NSMC) auditing

Data from audits of how clinicians are using medication charts guide healthcare organisations in measuring clinical practice. This leads to improved health outcomes for patients and embeds continuous quality improvement within hospitals.

NSMC audit

Audits provide evidence to support accreditation according to the NSQHS Standards (second edition).

Australian hospitals and day procedure centres can participate in the National Standard Medication Chart (NSMC) national audit or coordinate a local audit using the NSMC audit system.

The Commission will coordinate an NSMC National Audit in September 2020. Detailed information about the audit will be circulated closer to the date.

Please contact nsmc.audit@safetyandquality.gov.au for more information.

Audit resources

A number of resources have been developed to assist hospitals participating in the audit, including the recently revised Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) document that incorporates information relevant to the NSMC National Audit in September 2020.

Previous NIMC National Audit Reports

In September 2018, the National Inpatient Medication Chart (NIMC) audit system was replaced by the NSMC audit system.

NIMC national auditing has resulted in a large body of evidence on use of the NIMC. The NIMC National Audit Reports compile audit data from 2009–14.
