Data about how clinicians are using medication charts guides your healthcare facility in measuring clinical practice. This leads to improved health outcomes for patients and embeds continuous quality improvement within hospitals. Such activities provide evidence to support accreditation according to the NSQHS Standards.
Australian hospitals and day procedure centres can participate in the NSMC national audit or coordinate a local audit using the NSMC audit system.

NSMC national audit 2018
The Commission is coordinating a NSMC national audit from 1 October to 31 October 2018.
All health service organisations using a conforming NSMC are invited to participate.

A separate process will be developed for health service organisations who have implemented electronic medication management systems that include digital medication charts. This will not be part of the NSMC national audit 2018.
NIMC national auditing has resulted in a large body of evidence on use of the NIMC. The NIMC National Audit Reports compile audit data from 2009 until 2014.
