When used safely and within a robust quality framework, point of care testing (PoCT) provides significant benefits for patients and healthcare services.
By delivering rapid test results close to the patient, PoCT supports timely clinical decision-making, enables earlier diagnosis and treatment, reduces delays associated with laboratory processing, and can improve patient outcomes and experience.
The Guide will support health and aged care services undertaking PoCT when pathologist oversight is not possible.
This practical advice supports the safe, effective and consistent implementation and use of PoCT, including health service actions, reflective questions, suggested strategies, resources and case studies.
